Chris Appleby


Chris is a commercial lawyer with over 25 years’ experience, specialising in technology related matters.  He has worked in New Zealand, Australia and Hong Kong and has recently returned to New Zealand after 8 years practising law in the Middle East.   

Chris has experience in both private sector and government, with particular expertise in large-scale IT infrastructure procurement, systems integration, licensing agreements, IT contracting, telecommunications law and regulation, competitive tendering and contracting, probity, competition law, compliance and data protection and privacy.  He also advises on acquisitions and general corporate matters.

Chris’s practice also covers a wide range of Intellectual Property work including IP protection, technology creation and development, licensing, trade marks, copyright, plant variety rights, franchising and artist and gallerist rights. 

Originally from Christchurch, Chris is married with 2 children and enjoys swimming, cycling and motor-cycling.  He is a supporter of the visual arts and was a founder and volunteer legal adviser to the Physics Room artistic charitable trust in Christchurch.
