Jay Pierce

Fran moved from London to Nelson in 2018 after falling in love with Nelson and Tasman’s beautiful landscapes and more relaxed lifestyle, whilst on holiday with his wife and four children.
After passing his exams in Wellington at the start of 2019, he was enrolled as a barrister and solicitor of the New Zealand High Court, a task made far easier by the frequent reliance on English case law and legal principles in the New Zealand courts.
Legal Background
After gaining a First Class degree in Law, Fran completed his training at City University, London and the Inns of Court School of Law, London in 2000, where he was rated as ‘Outstanding’ in Civil Litigation. A 12-month pupillage, being trained by Neil Moody QC, Graham Eklund QC and David Thomas QC, followed.  From 2001 until 2018 Fran practised as an independent barrister at 2 Temple Gardens, Temple, London until 2010 and, afterwards, at Old Square Chambers, London (where he retains his membership).
Fran was rated as a leader at the Bar in legal directories for most of his practice. He was also singled out for praise in a judgment delivered by the English Court of Appeal for his ‘excellent’ written submissions and his ‘considerable skill’.
Primarily a courtroom advocate, Fran was instructed to pursue or defend claims by most of the top UK firms of solicitors representing insurers, corporate and government entities and individuals in a wide range of matters. These covered breach of health and safety at work regulations, contract, construction and property disputes, as well as appearing in the criminal courts; however, Fran usually appeared in civil claims relating to professional negligence and insurance against senior juniors and QCs.
Fran also acted in professional negligence claims in the Caribbean, working closely with leading QCs and local practitioners. He has appeared in the High Court and Court of Appeal in Port of Spain, Trinidad on multiple occasions.
Practice at HF Law
Fran’s practice relates to civil disputes (often arising out of commercial contracts, torts, trusts and land law) and employment law, although he has appeared in the criminal courts.
He also is happy to advise on professional liability and complaints and health law, such as disputes with ACC and inquests.
