Hamish founded Hamish.Fletcher Lawyers in 2003 and is proud to say that the family name has been ‘over the door’ for four generations. He says it was a privilege to work for his grandfather as an Office Junior, rising through to working alongside his father, Ron Fletcher, for 25 years as a lawyer and partner, and now to work with his son, Jack. History and loyalty are therefore big parts of who he is in business and everyday life.

Hamish has an extensive track record in all areas of law, including commercial and company law, conveyancing, fisheries and maritime. Hamish is also well respected in the region when it comes to property matters, horticulture, viticulture and commercial real estate.

Working with Māori Organisations across New Zealand over the last 25 years has been an important and significant part of Hamish’s legal practice. From working closely with Ngāi Tahu, Tainui and other North Island iwi in the late 1990’s and early 2000’s as they received their fisheries assets and grew their fisheries capability through to currently assisting a number of  Te Tau Ihu Iwi complete their land settlements with the Crown, providing day to day governance advice to iwi and acting for a number of iwi corporate entities.

Hamish regards our firm as part of his whānau. He encourages team members to lead by example with an attitude of working hard with a strong sense of infectious fun.

Working with not for profit and professional organisations enables Hamish to give back to both the community and professional bodies he is a member of. He currently serves on the board of Autism New Zealand, is a Vice President on the Federal Board of the Maritime Law Association of Australia and New Zealand (MLAANZ), Chair of the New Zealand branch of MLAANZ, and is a Council member of the New Zealand Law Society as the President of the Nelson Branch of the New Zealand Law Society.

Over the last 33 years Hamish has also served on the boards of the Nelson College Old Boys Association, Nelson Softball Association and Nelson United’s National League Football Club as well undertaking significant pro bono legal work supporting Nelson/Tasman charitable and sporting organisations.

He also enjoys paddle boarding, running and playing golf
